The Six Day War -- what was it and who started it?

Palestinefacts.org has a presentation of all the fighting between countries and what led to the Six Day War.

According to Zionism and Israel - Encyclopedic Dictionary:

"The Six Day War occurred against the background of continuing Arab world hostility to the State of Israel, which had begun with the War of Independence. In that war, the newly created state of Israel had defeated the Arab armies that had invaded it, and expanded its territory. The war had created about 700,000 Palestinian Arab refugees, who fled or were expelled in 1948......

"Tension began developing between Israel and Arab countries in the 1960s. Israel began to implement its National Water Carrier plan, which pumps water from the Sea of Galilee to irrigate south and central Israel. The project was in accordance with a plan proposed by US envoy Eric Johnston in 1955, and agreed to by Arab engineers. Arab governments refused to participate however, because of the implied recognition of Israel. In secret meetings, Israel and Jordan agreed to abide by the water quotas set by the plan......

"The US was caught by surprise by developments in the Middle East, but it may have unwittingly contributed to the crisis. In January of 1967, Senator Symington  discussed his recent trip to the Middle East in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Symington noted that US diplomats were disturbed by the big Israeli retaliatory raid on November 13, 1966 in Samu, in the West Bank (then under Jordanian control). The US had apparently developed the theory that Israel was attacking Jordan rather than Syria or Egypt, because Jordan was a US client and would be restrained by the US. The attack had weakened King Hussein. These concerns must have been impressed on the Israelis, who thereafter may have focused more attention on Syria.

"In assessing the situation in the Middle East shortly thereafter, on  January 16, 1967, Secretary State Dean Rusk delivered himself of three pronouncements which indicate that he, and apparently the entire US diplomatic establishment, were either blissfully ignorant of the situation or else they were unwilling to share their knowledge with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He asserted that the tension between Israel and Syria was due to a dispute over the borders in the demilitarized zone.  It was in fact due to Syrian efforts to divert the sources of the Jordan. He asserted that Fatah terrorists were not being supported by Arab governments, whereas in fact they were trained and apparently armed by Syrian military intelligence. Rusk's biggest error was that predicted that there would not be a war. These were not failures of insight or intelligence gathering. The decisions of the Arab summits were a matter of public record. They created the PLO to carry on "armed struggle" against Israel. They decided on the Jordan diversion scheme. They announced their plans to destroy Israel, in a time table that envisioned a war in 1968. All this was known, and yet Rusk claimed he did not have evidence of Syrian involvement and didn't think there would be a war, because neither side wanted one! None of the committee members challenged him.

"A major insight into United States policy toward Israel and the Middle East is gained from a singular revelation. In 1967, the United States had a plan to intervene militarily in the Middle East, including an attack on Israel, should the integrity of any nation be threatened. The United States was apparently seriously contemplating military intervention against Israel, as well as against Arab nations in the event of a war. This puts into stark perspective the empty reality behind the proclamations of generations of United States politicians regarding the "special relationship" of Israel with the United States. In reality, the relation to Israel is variable. The State Department tends to favor Arab states, while presidents at least feel they must pay lip-service to the "special relationship" with Israel.  Myths about the "Israel Lobby" to the contrary notwithstanding, there is no reason to assume the United States will stand by commitments it has made to Israel if it decided it was inconvenient to do so, in view of the evasive behavior of the U.S. government in the critical period preceding the Six Day War. This is especially underlined by the fact that Lyndon Johnson was known to be a "special friend" of Israel."

I encourage you to read from that web site above because the political games lead up to a letter from President Lyndon Johnson, June 3, 1967:

"Israeli foreign Minister Eban had implored the United States for some guarantee against an Egyptian attack and some firm action to break the blockade of the straits of Tiran.

"He was turned down by Secretary of State Dean Rusk.

"He was turned down by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, and he was turned down, essentially by President Johnson. The US could not commit itself to the defense of Israel for constitutional reasons, according to the administration. The US could not establish any intelligence or military liaison with Israel.

"The US could not open the straits of Tiran alone without first attempting to do so through a multilateral force or the UN. Israel must not attack the Arabs. These same messages were contained in a written statement that President Johnson handed Eban at their meeting on May 26, and reiterated in this letter."

Five days later on June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty was deliberately attacked by Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats. 34 Americans were slaughtered with 173 injured. It reminds me of something Benjamin Netanyahu said after the attack on the Gaza Flotilla a week ago: "The same countries that are criticizing us today should know that they will be targeted tomorrow..." Was the U.S.S. Liberty attacked because President Johnson could not comply with the request from Minister Eban? In my mind, there is NO justification for the open attack on our ship in international waters. The crew of the U.S.S. Liberty believed Israel was our friend.

"It is now established fact that the attack on the US Liberty was intentional and was covered up by Israel and US Government officials. There has never been a congressional investigation, nor has the testimony of the majority of survivors ever been officially taken. The book “What I Saw That Day…Israel’s 1967 Holocaust of American Servicemen Aboard The USS Liberty And Its Aftermath” by U.S.S. Liberty Survivor Phil Tourney is finished and available here. I am in the process of reading my copy.

From the book:

What I Saw That Day…Israel’s 1967 Holocaust of American Servicemen:

At last, the jets realized they would not succeed in sinking us. They called off their attack and left. Before we could breathe a sigh of relief however, the voice of Captain McGonagle came over the intercom, ordering the ship's crew to prepare for torpedo hit, starboard side.
I looked out to see the torpedo boats coming at us at a high rate of speed. Unlike the jets, the torpedo boats were proudly flying their flag, a Star of David. When I saw the flag and the high rate of speed they were coming at us, I breathed a sigh of relief. Foolishly, I assumed that our beloved ally had scared off the jets and were coming to our rescue.
The delusion lasted for only a minute until I saw the splash of several torpedoes being dropped in the water as they headed towards us. Unable to find a big enough vein during the first time with the air assault, the vampire now moved to a different part of our neck, searching out the jugular.” –Chapter 2–Rude Awakening

It was an act of war against the U.S. by Israel. The U.S.S. Liberty was flying three American flags. There could be no mistaking it for anything other than an American Naval vessel:

"ON JUNE 8, 1967, while patrolling in international waters in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, USS Liberty (AGTR-5) was savagely attacked without warning or justification by air and naval forces of the state of Israel. Of a crew of 294 officers and men (including three civilians), the ship suffered thirty four (34) killed in action and one hundred seventy three (173) wounded in action.  The ship itself, a Forty Million ($40,000,000) Dollar state of the art signals intelligence (SIGINT) platform, was so badly damaged that it never sailed on an operational mission again and was sold in 1970 for $101,666.66 as scrap.

"At 1400 hours, while approximately about 17 nautical miles off the northern Sinai coast and about 25 nautical miles northwest of El Arish, USS Liberty's crew observed three surface radar contacts closing with their position at high speed. A few moments later, the bridge radar crew observed high speed aircraft passing over the surface returns on the same heading. Within a few short moments, and without any warning, Israeli fighter aircraft launched a rocket attack on USS Liberty. The aircraft made repeated firing passes, attacking USS Liberty with rockets and their internal cannons. After the first flight of fighter aircraft had exhausted their ordnance, subsequent flights of Israeli fighter aircraft continued to prosecute the attack with rockets, cannon fire, and napalm.

"During the air attack, USS Liberty's crew had difficulty contacting Sixth Fleet to request assistance due to intense communications jamming. The initial targets on the ship were the command bridge, communications antennas, and the four .50 caliber machine guns, placed on the ship to repel boarders. After the Israeli fighter aircraft completed their attacks, three Israeli torpedo boats arrived and began a surface attack about 35 minutes after the start of the air attack. The torpedo boats launched a total of five torpedoes, one of which struck the side of USS Liberty, opposite the ship's research spaces. Twenty five Americans, in addition to the nine who had been killed in the earlier air attacks, were killed as a result of this explosion."

Late at night in the dark on May 30, 2010, Israel attacks the 'Gaza Flotilla' some 80 miles out to sea, killing 19 and wounding dozens. Furkan Dorgan, 19, holding U.S. citizenship, was shot five times and killed. Four shots to the head and one to the chest. Ellis Washington, who writes for WND said, "Israel was too easy on flotilla." Was Israel also too easy on the U.S.S. Liberty when they conducted an unprovoked, massive attack on OUR Naval vessel in international waters? How many more of these will supporters of Israel condone?

As I said on my radio show last week: Israel could have waited - as they did with the second flotilla - until it arrived at the port and then worked it out with all parties. Instead, we had a another blood bath in the cause of Zionism. I am not 'soft' on terrorism. I'm certainly not a liberal or a progressive liberal. I don't support terrorism no matter which country those cowards come from or the excuses they use to maim and kill anyone who gets in the way of their agenda. Personally, I'm sick of all of it and looking at photos of dead Palestinian children and dead Israeli children and dead Iraqi children and dead Afghani children. And, women and old people. Killing for peace.

Part three: The Gaza Flotilla had no weapons; it was a humanitarian effort. No, the Gaza Flotilla was full of terrorists bringing weapons to Gaza.
